High Fidelity

High Fidelity is a basic love story, but the author has made a ubiquitous theme unique by incorporating the protagonist's undying love of music.
Rob runs a failing London record shop, and his flat is filled with music (and almost nothing else). He has just broken up with his girlfriend Laura, and finds himself uncertain about his relationships, career and life. He examines his top five most painful breakups, and believes Laura isn't one of them - until he discovers her affair with a neighbour. Ian from that flat upstairs.
Rob's life hasn't changed very much during his 36 years, and neither has his emotional age or degree of stability. He doesn't know much about himself - his motivation, vices, or the bases of his various insecurities. This book follows Rob as be begins to understand who he is.
High Fidelity wouldn't be as good if it outright analyzed or defined Rob, but through the perceptive, wry and often judgmental narration, we discover the character ourselves. The humor is subtle and charming, and makes it fully possible to get inside Rob's head.
The side characters are fairly well developed, but if we understood their entire personality it would diminish our sense of seeing through Rob, because he certainly does not know or comprehend everything about them.
Laura is considerably more mature than Rob, and through her we have a better idea of how Rob appears to others. Laura is one of the less eccentric personalities, and gives the story a touch of reality.
Rob rided a roller coaster of emotion as he meets the ex-girlfriends from his past to find out why all his relationship turn out the same way. After a talk with Laura, where they get on and sort a few thing s out, Rob then goes and sleeps with Marie De Salle, a recording artist that he had met the other night when she was playing in a club.
What I like most about High Fidelity is that despite Rob's immaturity and flaws, Hornby creates a character you cannot help but like. This story is not perfect, but it is good.
