Amazon.com - Get Big Fast
(Robert Spector)
The book ?Amazon.com ? Get Big Fast? is all about the internet book store, how it came into being, how it survived the e-market, how it became a household name and finally how long will it remain the leader along with being a pioneer. First chapter tell us about Jeff Bezos, the person behind the successful venture. Jeff Bezos from the beginning was a hard working, intelligent and smart person who displayed panache in doing what ever he wanted to do. He demonstrated strategic and long term thinking at a very young age. When his mother could not buy him an Infinity Cube, he made one, on his own. Jeff then took a stride forward when he refused to join big corporations who were willing to give him seven digit salary. He joined a start-up that would give him more responsibilities at a young age. He started working in Manhattan with financial company that dealt with Fortune 500 clients and billions of dollars. He became youngest Vice-President in one of the firms that he worked in. Next chapter tells the strategies he thought about while shifting the base to Seattle to create his new company. Methodical approach was what he was fond of right from the beginning to convince others in buying his vision. Amazon.com started in a garage (Jeff bought a home having a garage and started the company there so that later he could say, ?We started our company in a garage??, just like Hewlett-Packard !). By hiring some of the smart people like Shel Kaphan and Paul Barton-Davis, he set the tone for a big company. These two were one of the most important employees who did all the ground work to make the system robust and that could absorb any shocks that would come as a result of exponential growth of the Internet. Keeping a strong focus on ?Customer first?, Jeff developed a strong community among Amazonians who had a one goal in their mind, ?to get big fast?. The middle chapters explain the early Amazon.com, how they shifted their ware houses as they grew bigger and bigger. Jeff, a brilliant recruiter, hired some of the big names in the industry which involved top brass people from Wal Mart, Microsoft, Symantec, Barnes and Noble, to name a few. Customer service was the key focus area and Jeff knew that positive word-of-mouth comments from customers mean more than the self boasting ads. On this note, various programs were launched like 1-Click shopping, Associate Programs and many more. To launch the company on the stock market, for its IPO, Jeff did a lot of ground work in most of the US states and all over Europe. Meanwhile, Amazon.com had to fight a lot of battles in the courts and off it against major book publishers and sellers like Barnes and Noble. Amazon.com was growing in size, in terms of market cap and its share price was soaring to new highs during the 1997-99. But it constantly incurred huge losses owing to investment in technology, inventory and various acquisitions of large and small web based companies. Jeff became a poster child of internet commerce and made sure his vision of selling almost anything on the web site turns into reality and that Amazon.com becomes bigger faster.
