Little Thumb

A woman wishes she could have a little child and goes to a witch for help. The witch advises her to sow a seed, which the woman does. The seed grows rapidly into a beautiful flower and sat inside the folded petals is the tiniest little girl. She is no bigger than the woman?s thumb and calls her Little Thumb.
Little Thumb lives happily with her mother until an ugly toad steels her for her son to marry. They put her on a lily pad in the middle of the pond so she cannot escape. While the toads are preparing for the wedding Little Thumb escapes with the help of a butterfly but is captured by a cockchafer that thinks she is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen. The other cockchafers are rude and call her ugly and so he decides to leave her on a daisy.
Little Thumb lives alone in the forest for the whole summer but soon winter sets in and she finds shelter in the home of a field mouse. She was allowed to stay as long as she cleans and tells stories.
The Field Mouse?s friend the Mole comes to visit and Little Thumb sings for him. He digs a tunnel to help Field mouse and Little Thumb to visit him but there is a dead Swift in the tunnel, which they ignore except Little Thumb. She goes back later to cover the Swift with a blanket only to find it?s alive. Secretly she feeds the Swift during the winter and in the spring he flies away. She doesn't go with him because she doesn't want to upset Field mouse.
Mole proposes to Little Thumb and she feels obliged to accept. She is trapped and cannot escape and isn't allowed to see the sky. The day arrived for her wedding when the Swift came by and flew her to a faraway land where he placed her on a flower. There she found a beautiful little man with wings who was the Spirit of the Flowers and King. He loved her immediately and they married. She was given wings and renamed Maga.
