Reading the Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy gives you a feeling of being slightly drunk. The mish mash of events and the storyline compound to make you realize just how funny life can be even at its deepest darkest moments and how utterly we humans are compared to the scale of the universe and the goings thereon. While mainly science fiction would be the correct genre to classify this book, it is still a great Read for people not interested in sci-fi as it brings out all the little complications and strange mannerisms that peculiarly define us humans and makes us laugh at ourselves and the silly notions we hold.
Written in a a highly original style by Douglas Adams who went to write several more books including one unfinished one, the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy has now been made into a film, however it is recommended to read the book in all its glory.
the books starts with the unfortunate event of the Arthur Dent, one highly confused human's house being knocked down by the local municipal guys to make way for a bypass, then followed by the demolition of the entire Earth to make way for a space bypass.
Various adventures later, Arthur and company, which include another Earth woman, a two headed President of the Galaxy, a depressed robot with a brain the size of a planet and Ford Prefect finally manage to save the universe and in the process Arthur even gets to see God's last message to the Universe.
One hell of a trip and raise your Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster's. Have dinner at the Restaurant at the end of the Universe and be part of a mad sun dive while you?re at it .Worth a re-read or two if you have that tipsy feeling.
Also figure out what 42 really means.
