Scared To Come Out

I had the pleasure of reading Ms. Nugent's book and it brought tears to my eyes. Althought the poetry needs to be a bit more polished, her raw emotion came out. From her struggle within who she knew she was, to her seduction and ultimate breakup, she carries you along with the complexity of her difficulties. My favourite poem was F. I found it to be supremely powerful. I could feel her frustration bursting forth, and her will as she fought to keep it inside, when all she wanted to do was swear. To lash out.
A short piece, but by no means simple.
Then there was the mystery of Who's Afraid Now. Daring. Captivating. My breath actually caught, and I gasped with the bold ending. A truly fascinating piece. Left me wondering, what happened next. Something only Ms. Nugent and the one to which the question was directed know for sure.
Ms. Nugent's work is written in a manner that is straight to the point, and this is a good thing. Because while it has its complexities that poetry lovers adore, it is also written with such ease that someone who is not truly into poetry can grasp. It reaches out to those who have struggles with finding out they are the exception to the norm's of society. With the need for acceptance by that same society whilst trying to be true to oneself. To be happy and free. Holds the hand of those who have loved with all their hearts and have had those hearts well and truly broken. It cries out to them and says.....you're not alone. It puts into words those composite agitations one experiences. the grief, the trepidation.
Scared to come out lives up to its name on every single level Ms. Nugent intended it to be.
