Match Me If You Can
(Susan Elizabeth Phillips)

Annabelle Granger comes from a long line of overachievers, and she's determined to break the string of failures that trails behind her like tin cans tied to a car bumper. Annabelle has inherited her late grandmother's matchmaking business, and she's determined to make a success of it. So what if most of her grandmother's clients were septuagenarians? So what if her family thinks this is one more in a succession of dead-end jobs? Marriages by Myrna has been revamped and renamed. It's now Perfect for You, and all Annabelle needs to make her the most sought-after matchmaker in the city is a stellar, headline-grabbing success, such as finding the perfect wife for Chicago's hottest bachelor. He isn't a client. He may not be looking for a wife. But nothing is going to stand in Annabelle's way. Not her family's disapproval. Not the drunk sleeping under her car. Not even Heath Champion's derision will deter her from her goal. Handsome, wealthy sports agent Heath Champion doesn't seem like the kind of man who'd need help finding a wife, but he's too busy to search for one. For years, he's worked unceasingly to achieve his goals, and to cap his success he needs the perfect wife. Heath knows just what he wants, and he's hired Portia Powers of Power Matches to find Ms. Right. The last thing he needs is a walking disaster like Annabelle complicating things, even if she is his biggest client's wife's best friend. So what if she's kind of cute in her wrinkled, stained suit with her red curls flying every which way? So what if she's entertaining? Nothing is going to derail Heath from achieving his final goal. Not the background he worked diligently to overcome. Not his past mistakes. Not the string of impossible women Portia has dished up so far. But since Portia hasn't come close yet, so Heath agrees to give Annabelle a chance. One chance, a twenty-minute meeting the following night. If she doesn't come up with a suitable candidate -- and he's sure she won't -- she'll never darken his door again. Portia Powers is Chicago's most exclusive matchmaker; her clients, the city's most eligible bachelors. Thin, wealthy, and successful, she has clawed her way to the top, and she's determined to stay there, despite the loss of two of her best clients. So what if her own marriage failed after barely a year? So what if her assistants hate her and she doesn't have any friends? All she needs to capture that elusive feeling of accomplishment is a headline-grabbing success. Nothing is going to stop her from finding the perfect wife for Heath Champion. Not the fact that her life is going to hell in a handbasket. Not that upstart Annabelle Granger. Not even Heath's tattooed, muscle-bound, extremely disconcerting bodyguard, Bodie Gray, who catches her spying to see what -- or, rather, whom -- Annabelle comes up with. Annabelle surprises Heath. (And Portia.) Not only does she present him with a very promising possibility, her presence eases the conversation between him and Portia's far-from-suitable choices. Heath is willing to hire Annabelle for that reason alone, but the fact that she's a good friend of Chicago Stars owner Phoebe Calebow sweetens the deal. While Portia digs deeper into her database of socialites, fashion models, and beautiful businesswomen, Annabelle devotes her energies to finding more clients -- and the right wife for Heath, although she's not at all convinced that the kind of woman he says he wants is the kind of wife he needs. With his two matchmakers striving to outdo one another, Heath can concentrnding fences with Phoebe, and acquiring new clients. But the perfect wife may be right under his nose . . . Susan Elizabeth Phillips serves up another winner with MATCH ME IF YOU CAN, a delightful tale of the everlasting search for the perfect mate. It would be hard to find two matchmakers more different than Annabelle and Portia, but both are equally determined to find the perfect wife for Heath. Despite his nickname "the Python," Heath is a pretty nice guy. Hard work has taken him far, but now he needs the perfect someone with whom to share his success. Someone polished, beautiful, and sweet. Someone who, unlike his father's girlfriends, will stay. Someone to keep his rough edges smoothed, and makes him feel as if he's achieved everything he ever dreamed of. Someone like . . . Annabelle? Surely not! But even though she's not the lithe, lovely, silver spoon wife Heath thought he wanted, the attraction between them is undeniable. Annabelle may lack the killer instincts needed to succeed in the business world, but her feistiness has a charm of its own. In many respects, she's exactly the kind of woman he's looking for, except that she's the type who will expect her husband to love her -- something that Heath, who learned the hard way that his emotional survival depended on not falling in love, isn't sure he will ever be able to do. The secondary romance between Portia and Bodie provides contrasting texture while enhancing and advancing the story. Reader favorites Phoebe Somerville Calebow (IT HAD TO BE YOU) and Molly Somerville Tucker (THIS HEART OF MINE) play pivotal roles, and fans of the author's Chicago Stars series will enjoy the appearances of characters from those books.
