Whiteout
(Ken Folletts)
Recently I got a chance to read Ken Folletts? Whiteout which starts with a container of deadly virus found to be missing from a Scottish medical research laboratory then a lab technician starts bleeding from the eyes. As a Christmas Eve blizzard whips out of the North Sea, several people unite on a remote family house. Stanley Oxenford, The research company?s director has everything riding on the drug he?s developed to fight the virus ? but he isn?t the only one. His grown children, who have come to spend the holiday, have their eyes on the money, it will bring. Once a top cop, Toni Gallo, was forced to resign from the Police department in disgrace. Now the security director for the research lab, she bets her career on keeping the drug safe. A local television reporter, who acts like a major whistle blower in search of his 5 minutes for fame, has somehow sniffed out a story at the cost of bending and twisting the facts. Meanwhile, a violent trio of thugs is on its way to steal it for a client ? although what that client really has in mind will shock everyone. As the storm worsens, the emotional sparks ? jealousy, distrust, sexual attractions, rivalries, desperate secrets are revealed, hidden traitors and unexpected heroes emerge. The story unfolds at good pace, not leaving you wondering when something is going to happen. Another plus would be the omittance of end-less pages of description to bog you down, the language used is sufficient to not require this, while still providing an excellent read. Whiteout is a really enjoyable read that no doubt will be devoured by Ken Follett fans. For new readers of this genre, you won?t be disappointed. Ken Folletts is the top tier of the world?s suspense/spy novelists. His books, The Key to Rebecca, Eye of the Needle, Lie Down with Lions, the non-fiction On Wings of Eagles, and his medieval master piece, The Pillars of the Earth are still widely read all over the world.
