Nicholas Nickelby
(Charles Dickens)
Nicholas Nickelby is a young boy edged into manhood and sudden responsibilty after the sudden death of his father which plunges the family of three into near penury. The travails of himself and younger sister in the hands of their father's cruel brother, whom they turn to for help, serves as an eye opener to the painful reality of finding pain where life had intended one to find respite and succour. Their long and painful journey from the needless wickedness of an uncle they had chosen to trust and in the hands of sadistically cruel individuals such as the schoolmaster and his wife, to the unbreakable bond of true friendships(with Smyke for instance) they forge on their way to happiness and love is reflective on human nature and the truth that one does not always find a pot of gold at every rainbows end, but may find gold in the murky waters of despair. We see further the usually inevitable triumph of good over evil, of benevolence over malevolence and of love over contempt. We see that family lies not in the essence of similar blood that runs through our veins but in those persons we find that we are willing and unhesitant to shed our blood for, should the need ever arise. That we are not always born into family but that we make our own families from those born into our hearts. Nicholas Nickelby inspires hope in hearts of despair and triumph over pain, renewing faith in our ability to love again and to release loved ones into the continuous circle of life with the present knowlegde that life does not end upon death but continues in the hearts that we have touched and the lives that have touched our hearts. For it is only when we realise that this that we have unlocked one more mystery in the tapestry of life.
