Have you ever wished for something, gotten what it was you hoped for, then become afraid and sabotage your happiness? This is in an essence, what Jodi Picoult's novel Harvesting the Heart is about, centering around the dynamics of a young family An artist marries a heart surgeon, they have a baby and life should be grand, right? Well married life, baby and general responsibilities overwhelm the young mother. The father Nicolas, who is never home, strives to be the top cardic surgeon, doesn't understand the baby blues she is going through, and walks all over her Paige grew up without a mother after the age of five. Fresh out of High School, Paige leaves her fathers home after a disappointing evening with her then boyfriend and moves to Chicago to attend Art School. While in Chigago, she gets a job as a waitress. It is there she meets her future husband while waiting on him at the café. Shortly after they marry a baby boy Max is born, Paige stats to doubt her self worth as a mother, wondering why her motherly insticts have not reached full potential. Leaving one night to go the the super market, Paige's desire to find out about her own mother overwhelms her and she doesn't return home. While away she learns her life is not what she thinks it is. Her father has lied to her, her mother has never wanted her, or has she? As she struggles to find wholeness, she searches for her mother, learns a hard truth and eventually returns home to no open arms. Little by little the arms open with a lot of help from her mother in law. After an accident with Max, Paige is finally taking the lead and easing back into the home. By far, this book is one of Ms. Picoult's best. She makes the reader feel and respond to the words she writes. Harvesting the Heart is a woderful book with a lot of attention to tiny details. I am sure you will like it as much as I have.
