Shiloh
(Phyllis Reynolds Naylor)
?Shiloh? is the story of a boy who is determined to save a mistreated dog that followed him home one day. When the small beagle follows Marty home, Marty?s father makes him return the dog to his owner, Judd. Marty finds that Judd mistreats his dogs and is very upset about having to leave Shiloh with him. When Shiloh runs away again and ends up back in Marty?s yard, Marty decides that he cannot go against Shiloh?s trust in him by returning him to his abusive master. Without his parent?s knowledge, Marty builds a small pen in the woods and sneaks food out to him each day. Marty and Shiloh become great friends. It isn?t long before Marty?s mother suspects something and follows him into the woods. She is very disappointed in Marty, but promises not to do anything until morning while Marty decides what he should do. That night, Shiloh is attacked by a larger dog who gets into the pen. The family decides to help Shiloh recuperate before taking him back to Judd. Gradually, the whole family comes to love the dog. Judd finds out about the dog and demands that he be returned. Marty will do anything he can to prevent this from happening. On the day that Shiloh is to be returned, Marty wakes before the rest of the family and walks toward Judd?s house, planning to refuse to let Shiloh return. On the way, he sees Judd shoot a deer out of season. Marty makes a deal with him that he will not tell about the deer and will work on Judd?s farm and Marty will keep Shiloh. Marty keeps his promise and goes to Judd?s farm every day. Judd works him hard and gives him tasks that are more than a boy his age should be doing, but Marty works hard to keep Shiloh away from that place. While working, Marty gets a glimpse into the life of this man who he has always hated. He learns that there is more to a man that what you see at first glance. This book explores many areas of morality. Marty struggles with himself trying to determine, what is a lie and is it wrong when it is meant for a good purpose? He also struggles with how Judd could mistreat his dogs without some intervention from the law. As the book progresses, he learns that there is no ?black and white?. Judd my be mislead, but he is not the ?bad guy? that Marty saw him as before. The author, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, has written over 100 books for children and young people. ?Shiloh? received a Newbery Award Medal in 1992, was name a Notable Children?s Book by the American Library Association, and was listed as a Young Adult Choice by the International Reading Association. Naylor has written two sequels to ?Shiloh?, ?Shiloh Season? and ?Saving Shiloh?, both stories of how Marty tries to help Judd learn not to mistreat his dogs.
