Here On Earth
(Alice Hoffman)
This is a haunting novel about a woman, March Murray reconnecting with her past and all that comes with it in a small town in Massachusetts. She revisits with old friends and an old love, while initially coming for the funeral of a close family friend. Although her husband is back in California where she?s lived with him and her daughter for almost the past two decades, March plays with fire as she rekindles an old romance with Hollis (ex-boyfriend from her youth, also adopted brother). This book is reminiscent of Wuthering Heights. However, try to imagine what would happen if the star-crossed lovers weren?t parted by death, and what would occur, despite everyone else?s unhappiness. The characters and initial piece of the plot are similar to Wuthering Heights. For example, most of the characters mirror Wuthering Heights; the adopted son Hollis, the daughter (March) who ends up falling in love with the adopted son (Hollis), the brother, Alan, of March who despises and tortures Hollis, the doting and generous father who adopts Heathcliff/Hollis, etc. The plot at first is strikingly akin to Wuthering Heights as March and Hollis have a romance but it is cut short by shame and youth, however, it is rekindled later on in life. In addition, Hollis bears such resentment towards Alan and the townspeople of the town he lived in that he works obsessively to accrue vast amounts of money and buys up large amounts of property all to lure March back to Massachusetts just as Heathcliff did to Cathy. March's husband and Hollis are as different from each other as the states they each live in, California and Massachusetts. California, itself, is symbolic of March?s husband?s love for her; sweet, easygoing, sunny, good weather, etc. Whereas Massachusetts is a good representation of Hollis and his love for March; dark, troubled, all-encompassing, changing weather with the seasons, and much easier to get caught up and lost in. March?s fifteen-year-old daughter, Gwen discovers a new life while in Massachusetts. She finds love and a purpose as she befriends her cousin and a horse on Hollis? property. Her life in California left much to be desired, as she was having reckless sex with guys she didn?t care about, smoking, hanging out with friends she barely liked, and feeling empty inside. Both mother and daughter find themselves in Massachusetts. Delving into the depths of Hollis? revenge and obsession with March, Gwen and March are forced to make decisions they may not have made if they had stayed in California. This book is March and Hollis' heaven as they finally get to be together. However, it is duly titled Here On Earth as it's in the present time and with very realistic circumstances (March is married) and both Hollis and March each have their own child. Although, it resembles Wuthering Heights, it is worth the read and creatively veers enough from Wuthering Heights? plot that it is magical and charming all on its own. It twists and turns in plot with grace and finesse and you will savor every moment of it.
