Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
"Pride and Prejudice" has long been thought a
classic of British Literature. Emerging during a time of
upheaval and political tension, this book takes a lighter
look at the lives of the English. While many of the period
chose to make political statements with their art, Jane
instead drew her readers away from the pressing issues of
the day into a world of fanciful delight. Throughout, Jane
challenges the common ideals of the time, while still
promoting certain aspects of polite society and all that it
entails. This story is rich in quirky anecdotes, and
compelling emotional indecisions. It appraises life from
the point of view of a smart, competent young lady, which,
at the time, was not commonly thought of as ideal.
Jane
Austen's book "Pride and Prejudice" is an account of a
family in the English Countryside whose quest to find
suitors for the young women of the household leads to an
exquisite telling of a young girl's (Elizabeth) rather
rebellious outlook on society.
Throughout the story,
young Liz watches as her sister Jane falls madly in love
with a wealthy young man, whose friend inadvertently also
falls in love with Liz.
Jane must face the obstacles of
her desired man's sisters' interference, while Liz is
completely oblivious to the love that awaits her.
In
the meantime, Liz finds herself caught in the line of sight
of a cousin she abhors, and a strapping military man whom
she is quite taken by. Through all of this though, she
manages to remain strong, and independent, never taking her
lot in life as a pre-destined plot designed by her rather
over anxious mother.
Eventually, Liz is forced to re-
examine her thoughts and ideals to see if perhaps, her own
pride has created in her just the type of prejudice she
initially seeks to rise above. Upon contemplation she is
able to grow and learn from her experiences, transforming in
the course of the book from a rather headstrong and yet
intelligent girl, to a confident and competent young lady.

True to form, Austen weaves a tale indicative of the
romanticism of the era, where customary beliefs and
practices are challenged. This book both demonstrates the
behaviors that were then thought to be absurd, while also
hinting at traditions own absurdities.
Austen does not
fail to engross the reader, as seldom she does, and also
creates a touching rendition of love and misconception
during the romantic/Victorian era.
Besides a lively
and rich plot, a sympathetic and intriguing character, and
beautifully developed and static antagonists, Austen gives
the reader a glimpse at society and ritual customs of the
time. Her well-crafted humor, and satirical hints are a
treasure to read.
