After having escaped the hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional aliens that wanted to buy Arthur Dent's brain in order to have the Ultimate Question, the five protagonist of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy decide to go the Restaurant at the End of the Universe (the title of the second book of the series). Unfortunately, their plans are broken when a float of Vogon ships attack the Heart of Gold. Due to Arthur's request of a real cup of tea, the whole ship's resources are used in solving this problem, so when the Vogons launch some missiles towards the Heart of Gold, the ship does not move a centimetre from its place. Desperate, Zaphod Beeblebrox decides to call his great grandfather Zaphod Beeblebrox the Fourth. After a long discussion with his great grandfather, this last decides to help our protagonist and disappears the Heart of Gold from where it was. From now the book follows Zaphod way through various planets in search of Zarniwoop, the director of the Ursa Minor publishing houses where the Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy is published.
Zaphod is teleported to Ursa Minor B home of Ursa Minor publishing houses and a planet where there is always afternoon, except for a small suburb in which it is always evening. He manages to convince both the receptionist and an unwilling lift to bring him to floor fifteen where Zarniwoop is supposed to be while travelling through the Universe. Once here, the building is attacked by Frogstar Fighters who kidnap the left wing of the publishing company and bring it to Frogstar World B which has collapsed and it is in ruins; here Zaphod is punished with the Total Perspective Vortex and machine that makes anyone see how big the entire universe is and how small is this person compared to the universe.
Zaphod survives the Total Perspective Vortex because he is in a alternative universe, a fake universe in which Zarniwoop has been hiding until Zaphod finds him and brings the Heart of Gold. Zarniwoop is hiding because he together with Zaphod, Zaphod's great grandfather, the previous president Yooden Vranx and Zarniwoop's assistant Roosta, planned to seek and talk to the man that rules the universe but for that they needed the Heart of Gold as it is the only ship that can reach the planet where the ruler of the universe live for the reason why it is surrounded by an Improbability Field. Once he hears Zarniwoop's explanation, Zaphod decides to go away with the unshrunk Heart of Gold to which he commands to go the nearest place to eat. The ship obeys his order and transfers forward its cruise five hundred seventy-six thousand million years to the restaurant at the end of the universe.
The restaurant at the end of the universe it is a restaurant built in the remains of Frogstar World B that hangs inside a temporal bubble that permits it go back in time and revive the end of the universe time and time again. Here Zaphod, Arthur, Ford Perfect and Trillian found Marvin who has been waiting them during those years and who at the moment is in the restaurant's parking. Once in the parking, they decide to steal a black ship that pertains to Hotblack Desiderato, a former friend of Ford Perfect and a musician famous for his spectacular, noisy concerts. Disgracefully to them, the ship that they have stolen forms part of a famous concert which ended one of its song by sinking their ship in the sun. Not having another alternative, they use a teleport with no autosystem which means that they can be teleported anywhere in the universe. Zaphod and Trillian reappear in the Heart of Gold and go to see the man who rules the universe; Ford and Arthur appear in an unknown ship pertaining to a colony of Golgafrinchans travelling toward prehistoric Earth in order to settle and create a new home. This second book is as amusing as the first book The Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy, a recommended lecture for those who have read the first book and loved it. Like the first book, The Restaurant at the End Universe ining parody of science-fiction books in which are reflected certain aspects of our civilization
