Leo Cernitori is a still nature photographer. Divorced, two children who have quite forgotten him, he meets almost by accident the woman who?s going to upset his relatively calm life.
All starts at Leo?s cousin birthday party.
The latter asks him to accompany and cover him while he meets his lover and Leo, who accepts to favor him, is immediately stroked by the woman?s mysterious personality.
Manuela Duini herself? this is the name of the charming musician ? can?t help feeling the same attraction, so a passionate, yet tormented affair starts hereby, an affair which will drive Leo to the edge of despair.
The couple shares happy moments, critical ones, magic nights accompained by the tunes played in Manuela?s concerts in various Italian cities, and also physical fights which leave our photographer covered with wounds and scares ? and not only the exterior ones. Manuela appears everyday more incoherent and unattainable, and Leo?s soul is torn in this contrast among endless love, confusion, disappointment and rage.
But the artist?s unstable, if not psycotic, seems suddenly to reveal its origins in a past crowded by violent characters.
The most dangerous one is doubtless Mimmo Cerino, a dishonest man who used to be Manuela?s lover: the thug appears to be a yet-not-ended charter in the young lady?s life, and when he arrives to threaten both her happiness and her life, Leo decides to intervene.
The end is a striking one. Leo finds out where is Mimmo, but when he arrives to his flat, he finds the man dead, hanging from the ceiling.
In my opinion this work is extremely involving: with his well-known casual style, De Carlo has interpreted a real concert of feelings (it?s right the case of using such a term) thus reaching the deepest personality of each of his characters without spoiling that mysterious halo wrapping some of them.We can see many actors and theirs enemies appearing, moving and interacting through the pages of this book, and sometimes it happens that the reader can?t grasp a definitive classification of them within one of these two opposite factions: let?s just think about Leo and Manuela?s figures, and their conflicting, instable relationship.
