(His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama)

The Dalai Lama?s Book of Wisdom
This little book which can fit in the palm of your hand or in your back pocket is based on the bestseller, The Power of Compassion. Basically it is 115 pages of direct quotes from His Holiness the Dalai Lama XIV concerning four major life issues: Contentment, Joy and Living Well; Facing Death and Dying; Dealing with Anger and Emotion; and Giving and Receiving. I believe the goal of having the book printed in this tiny format is to allow the reader to carry it with them anywhere they might be going. In essence, the reader can look for a bit of friendly advice from the master of pointing out the truths and realities of life?s struggles. After all the Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent struggle for the liberation of Tibet in 1989, so he is world renowned as a wise man and a committed leader. He is still the spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people, although he has lived in exile in India since 1959.
In Contentment, Joy and Living Well, the Dalai Lama offers 23 separate short lessons on the appreciation of a good life while understanding the consequences of a bad one. His lessons here are practical, filled with a positive philosophy that will make you think no matter what religion you practice.
In Facing Death and Dying, the 19 lessons are offered to both comfort those suffering from loss and encourage and reassure those facing their own demise. Again it is important to realize his lessons are of a Buddhist nature and background; however, the wisdom is simple and helpful for someone who practices any faith or discipline.
Dealing with Anger and Emotion, has 31 lessons and is by far the best part of the book. These lessons are dealing with the rampant problem of rage in our society, frustration within ourselves, and the negative aspects of the world in which we live in. Considering the Chinese government has driven him from his homeland, killed thousands of his followers, and still control his followers by force, it is amazing to see him so dedicated to eliminating the feelings of anger in the world. He is especially against revenge and has always told everyone that, even when it comes to the Chinese, revenge is wrong and will only create further hardship.
Finally he ends with Giving and Receiving, and in this section he also offers 31 lessons on the concept of how to be at harmony in a world where everything is seemingly a trade off. He truly strikes at the heart of this problem and makes one think of motivation and desires of giving which often conflict with our expectations of receiving. This is by far the most original and interesting part of the book.
As an inspirational guide book for self exploration or as a book used to bring up ideas for philosophical growth, this work of honest and simple wisdom is well worth $8.95 I paid for it.
