Wuthering Heights
(Emily Bronte)

This is one of the most passionate novel I hav ever read. The dark windy background gives us the sense of a mystery. A story so intense and grasping. It is a story about unfulfilled love and revenge. Most part of the story is conveyed to us through narration first by Mr. Lockwood and then by Nelly.

Mr. Lockwood is the new tenant of Thrush Cross Grange which is owned by a Mr. Heathcliff. As a courtesy Mr. Lockwood goes to visit his landlord at Wuthering heights. Here, he meets a young woman, a young man and Heathcliff. He tries to understan the relationship between them and ends up guessing them wrong. This increases his curiosity to find out more about this very strange family. He coaxes Nelly the house keeper to tell him more about these people.

The story goes back to when Heathcliff was just a boy. Mr. Earnshaw had brought a boy whom he finds stranded on the street, this boy is Heathcliff. Mr. Earnshaw has a son Hindley and a daughter Catherine, who is the same age as Heathcliff.Mr. Earnshaw favours Heathcliff and this makes Hindley very angry. All the other members too find Heathcliff strange but except for Catherine who adores him.

After Mr. Earnshaw's death Hindley gets back to Heathcliff by stopping his education and treating him like a labourer. He tries hard to bridge a gap between Catherine and Heathcliff as he hates their friendship. He tris to make Catherine acquainted to the Lintons. The Lintons are a respectable and wealthy family who live at Thrush Cross Grange. The Linton's son Edgar becomes fond of Catherine. This makes Heathcliff jealous but he tolerates the growing distance between him and Catherine.

One day Edgar proposes to Catherine and she accepts it. Heathcliff over hears Catherine telling Nelly that she chose Edgar over Linton only because she thought that Heathcliff is not a gentleman and to marry him will mar a reputation and her status in the society. Heathcliff is very hurt and he leaves Wuthering Heights and goes away.

Catherine is devastated. She cannot bear this situation. Edgar marries her to help her overcome this grief. She starts a new life with Edgar when one day Heathcliff returns. He has become a gentleman now and is as much desirable as Edgar.

Catherine's emotional conflict begins. She wants both the men in her life. In order to gain this she ends up hurting Linton and herself too. She can never get out of this emotional turmoil. She gives birth to Edgar's daughter and dies.
Heathcliff is torn apart by the news of Cathrerine's death. He feels like an injured lion. He laothes all those who seperated him and Catherine. He vows to take revenge. He elopes with Isabella. Edgar's sister and has a son from her.
The rest of the novel reveals how Heathcliff destroys Hindley and takes over wuthering heights. He treats Hindley's son Hareton in the same manner as he was treated years ago by his father. He forces Catherine's daughter Cathy to marry his son Linton. He then takes over Thrushcross grange.

The novel closes with the death of Heathcliff and Cathy the young woman whom Lockwood had met earlier gets married to Hareton, the other young man.
