The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
(Douglas Adams)
Arthur Dent, a middle-class Englishman of no notable stature, suddenly finds his world tipped upside down when villanous and sloth-like aliens called the Vogons destroy earth to make may for an intergalatic expressway. Saved at the last moment by his friend Ford Prefect (a deliberate mispelling of the word 'Perfect' in reference to car model of that name), Arthur finds himself immersed in a world of aliens, sarcasm, and improbability. Ford and Arthur initally hide out on the Vogons ship, having used a ring in Ford's possesion which serves as an inter-galactic 'thumb-out' sign, requesting a lift. It turns out that Ford in fact works for an Inter-galactic company known as the 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy', which comes in the form of a small hand-held computer and contains data on all numerous planets and cultures. Ford has been on earth for the last few years researching his latest piece for the guide. His entry on Earth: 'Harmless'. Ford and Arthur soon find themselves captured and tortured by Vogons, ejected into space, and then picked up by one Zaphod Beeblebrox, Ford's cousin and the current President of the Galaxy. With Zaphod are Tricia McMillan (or Trillian as she is often called), and Marvin the robot, who is constantly depressed about his great intellect and the lack of a place to use it. Together these five, aided by the starship 'Heart of Gold', which runs on an engine that is able to alter the laws of probabilty, discover the ancient and hidden planet of Magertha, which at one time specialized in designing and building entire planets, including the planet earth, which it turns out was in fact an eons-long experiment commisoned by a race of extra-dimesnional beings that manifest themselves on earth as: Mice.
