Do Poetry and commercial art mix? Do art and money mix? What is the symbolism of Laura's (Mary Tyler Moore's) haircut? Or the influence of Lou Reed on Jerome Sala's copywriting? Of Time on his poetry? Of time on Poetry? Or Poetry Magazine on Time? These silly questions are not exactly addressed.
More like they are sideblinded like Saul Williams on the Road to Damascus in this tour de force. A generalist surveying his tropes, Sala's rides high and strong on the common idiom, and his casual antics are soothing arrows of light straight to the Hart Cranium.
Made with elastic Sala's invisible slimmer will flatten your bulging thought midsections like that!Unlike other pretending, the invisible work contained herein will fit anywhere even under the thinnest of metaphors.
More focus on Ideas not Spam or Skillet Lickin'.Careful when cleaning. Do not use bleach. Stains will disappear with lukewarm effort.

For best results, read in a quiet place with no distraction.
Concentration doses of the New York style, O Bernstein, O'Hara.
Let it dry quickly and slowly sink in.
From hip to head, this book will help you become mentally more attractive, and active.
Read this book: it is a Baedeker of recent if not now.
As for history, some of the following is taken from the Kurt Heintz's "An Incomplete history of Slam" web pages.
For those who don?t recognize the author, Jerome Sala is one of the godfathers of Slam Poetry, the James Brown of Slams, the Jack Benny, Johnny Carson and Marilyn Monroe of Slam.
He was before Marc Smith and Get Me High Lounge?even though Jerome was good friends with Butchie before Smith started hosting poetry nights there--and the Green Mill Lounge. Back in the odelay-de-day. The salad days of the Sex Pistols, the Dictators, The New York Dolls and Joy Division, all of which influenced his first work --- Spaz Attack ? that came out around this time. His first book of poetry, that fueled his underground fame for his fast-paced and witty readings.
Like many other poets at certain points of their career, he and his consort/wife Elaine Equi moved to Manhattan. But not before the Match and the Rematch, both of which Sala won. (Sounds more like tennis than boxing, doesn't it?)
While living in California, I had been hearing reports from messengers and fellow travelers about the poetry slam at a club called Tuts, which in a previous incarnation, was a showcase lounge frequented by the Rolling Stones. Friends of Sala?s like ?James Mean" Gordon, a bartender at Katzenjammer, a punk bar in Lincoln Park; Bob "Righteous" Rudnick, one of the first underground free form radio DJs; Jerome?s ex-wife the late Bambi Brooks; and John Zielinski, a doctor friend.
As Equi told it on the Slam History website. "My husband was reading at some space in Chicago... his readings were always accompanied by a lot of audience participation. There was one particular musician, one named Jimmy Desmond, who got irritated easily when he was drunk. He grabbed a chair and swung at Jerome. There was a fight, but it didn't actually come to blows."
From what I recall, Desmond was a friendly but strident new wave blues musician who was usually quite harmless. He had his quirks. One time he 86ed me from going to see Bozo the Clown with him and a group of friends?for whatever reason attributed to alcohol, and he would get pissed off when people in local bars bought me drinks thinking it was him.
An Incomplete History of Slam quotes Jerome Sala as saying "A couple days later I got call from Al Simmons. . .."He said, 'Jimmy Desmond would like to challenge you to a ten-round poetry fight to the death. . .'"
Whether Simmons got it from professional boxing or from New York Dial-a-Poets John Giorno, Anne Waldmers is immaterial, he stumbled onto something fairly new, and booked a poetry bout between Desmond and Sala, that made history. Jerome became the first and two-time Heavweight Champion of Slam Poetry.
After Spaz Attack came I Am Not a Juvenile Delinquent , The Trip and Raw Deal. He has also prospered in his career as commercial wordsmith and creative director.
Literary and art critic Peter Schjeldahl, as qualified as any in his estimations, called Jerome Sala's poetry "wide-open, funny/horrifying, sneaky/serious sort that I haven?t seen the likes of in many years.?

I don?t think this book has had a huge printing. Distribution could be spotty, so check around. You may order directly from the publisher at http://softskull.com/
