Thad Beaumont became a writer at the tender age of 11 and submitted his work in a contest in a well known teen magazine. Although he could not win the contest because of his age the magazine let it be known that he was very good and he would have won a prize if not for his young age and that is when his nightmare really began.
Afflicted suddenly with strange and excruciating headaches precluded by the sounds of sparrows singing, Thad was found to have a tumor in his brain. A tumor that the doctors could write down in the medical journals for all time. Found in Thad's brain was the remains of what seemed to be a twin that as an embryo Thad had basically consumed. The doctor's declared the surgery a success and sent Thad on his way with a clean bill of health.
The year's go by and time does fly, so do the sparrows. In a very public way Thad decides to bury his pen name George Stark and continue his literary life under his own. Bad mistake. George is not so happy with being relegated to the garbage heap and decides he is going to take his life back one way or the other. Gruesome murders and terrifying unexplained happenings eventually lead Alan Pangborn, the sheriff of Castlerock, Maine, and Thad to believe the unbelievable that Stark had somehow come to life and was wreaking havoc on the world at large.
As the surreal becomes real, the sparrows are back as a warning of the living dead. Thad must learn how to defeat Stark at his own game or risk losing not only his life but the life of his wife and twins also.
This is Stephen King at his best and a must read for all who enjoy stepping beyond the bounds of reality and into the world of the unknown.
