The Spontaneous Fulfillment Of Desire
(Deepak Chopra)
The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire, by Deepak Chopra falls somewhere between the Self-Help genre and a simplified essay on quantum physics. There are almost religious undertones in the manner which the author addresses the latter, crossing the line from science to spirituality and back again. The breaking down of this line is a continuing theme throughout the book as he attempts to show the reader how to use the power of coincidence as a tool for creating one?s own destiny. The first few chapters are dedicated to familiarizing the reader with the basics of quantum physics. Chopra explains the three different domains; the Physical Domain - matter and objects, The Quantum Domain - information and energy, The Nonlocal Domain - intelligence and consciousness. He focuses primarily on this last on and also refers to it as the Virtual Domain. He cites evidence from scientific experiments to prove it?s existence and it?s important role in shaping our lives. He introduces the subatomic particle, and explains that this ?particle? can be either a particle or a wave of energy , depending on what scientific questions are asked about it?s nature. If one asks ?Where is it?? then it becomes a particle because it has been given location. However, if one were to ask ?What is it?s momentum?? then it has been given movement as the critical factor and therefore must be a wave. The basic point is to explain that until this mysterious wave particle is given identity or classification, it is pure potential. He tells us that this is the universe at it?s most basic form and this pattern continues regardless of the complexity of the object or idea in question. The mind shapes everything, and before the mind does this, everything has the potential to be anything. The nonlocal mind is an ocean and we are all waves in that ocean Chopra explains that we are all part of a universal, nonlocal intelligence of pure potential and that we, are a local, individual pattern which emerges from it. Our ability to manipulate and change the nonlocal to fit our needs, will in turn change the local world (physical) as we know it. He calls this synchrodestiny, and goes on to explain that coincidences are clues to the intention of the nonlocal mind. We are advised to pay attention to these coincidences and utilize them in our day to day decision making. The book somewhat loses cohesiveness when it moves on to a chapter called Archetypes and Desires. The auther introduces us to the use of Archetypes to find out what it is we actually want out of life, now that he has taught us how to get it. According to Chopra, in order to know this you have to find your archetype(s.) The Divine Mother, The Sage, Dionysus, The Saint, Athena?he goes on with a list of examples of these themes and says each of us have one or a few of these Archetypes within us. The chapter guides the reader through a meditation on seeking out that inner Archetype. There is a short chapter on meditation and then Chopra moves on to give us seven short chapters on each of the Seven Principles. The principles seem to have been developed by the author as a way to strengthen the reader?s understanding of synchrodestiny and the nonlocal intelligence. The First Principle: You are a ripple in the fabric of the cosmos. The Second Principle: Through the mirror of relationships I discover my nonlocal self. The Third Principle: Master your inner dialogue. The Fourth Principle: Intent weaves the tapestry of the universe. The Fifth Principle: Harness your emotional turbulence. The Sixth Principle: Celebrate the dance of the cosmos. The Seventh Principle: Accessing the conspiracy of improbabilities. He provides sutras to go along with each principle, along with meditation exercises. As said earlier, this book struggles to balance science and spirituality. Though it doesn?t always flow well, it functions just as fine if not read from front to back as a cohesive unit, and it provides a wealth of fasccinating information and ideas.
