The Further Adventures Of Halley's Comet
(John Calvin Batchelor)
'Far out man!' 'The Further Adventures of Halley's Comet' is a psychadelic literary rollercoaster ride which will quite literally blow your mind. Forget the fact that you have to wade through a trifling few pages of dry facts about the composition of comets, meteors and other celestial bodies. Instead, revel in the delights of larger than life (without at all becoming irritating) characters, comets in human form, love, sex, death, war, drugs and ghosts. This book is without genre: it is comedy, tragedy, romance, science fiction and fantasy, all with a little added dollop of cannabis. Prepare to be amazed as the story begins with two jewish lawyers who used to be hippies (and indeed have not been able to drop some of their old hippy habits), then spirals on to a fantastic party of the Straw People, the breathtakingly beautiful aristocracy of this society who serve to create a contrast and comparison to the likes of our original characters, the lawyers (of course it is quite obvious that in no time at all the rich and beautiful become the villains, whilst the moderate become the heroes of the hour, on the side of 'good'). Throughout the book the reader learns of the history of the Straw People during the time of the Vietnam war, which in this case is not treated to the heavy-handed brutality of writing that this topic normally implies. Also included is a love story between drunk jockey Gracie and our hero Effert Broadsword, chivalric romantic to the core, which the reader unashamedly cheers on. The tale culminates, after 400 or so gripping pages, in a huge almost intergalactic, otherworldly battle, the finale of which is the shocking discovery that the real villains of the piece are Positivism and Capitalism, which amazingly have managed to kill one of our hero's enemies and seriously disfigure two to others. It isn't in any way an easy, but it is without a doubt worth the effort.
