Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
Pride and Prejudice is a novel which follows the main character, Elizabeth, through an adventure leading to true love. Written in the Romantic period, it is a pleasant, easy-to-read, but alas, slow-starting novel which will garner many female fans, but probably few of the male persuation. As the title suggests, along the way Elizabeth must learn to control her own pride, especially as it comes to men and matters of the heart. She also must learn to monitor her prejudices, like the ones she has about the leading male character, Mr. Darcy. The novel centers around the Elizabeth Stanton and her sisters, all of whom are young ladies right about the marrying age. While her father is an intelligent man, he does not seem to follow the intricacies of matters of the heart, and is very willing to let the girls fend for themselves. Elizabeth, who is not very interested in the advances of young men yet, is the most sensible of her siblings, and yet, this leads to her being the most unprepared for courtship. Elizabeth and her sisters go through many romantic mistrials, including that of her younger sister and her elopement, with Mr. Darcy eventually coming to save the day and win Elizabeth's heart, but by using respect and true love. Elizabeth learns to control her pride enough to appreciate Mr. Darcy's efforts, and through mutual respect they learn to love and trust each other. The book has parts written in the epistolary fashion, which means through letters, and also teaches how original apperances can deceive, and we should not be prejudiced by them. This is shown through the contrasting romances of Elizabeth and her younger sister, and how her parents foolishly like the man who elopes with her sister, ruining her reputation, and originally distrust Darcy, who is, at heart, a gentleman.
