Before departing for that adventure, she made a once in a life time visit to her grandmother in Vladivostok where, feeling sorry for her grandmother, was lured into becoming a nice spy for the Russians. She went to the Pacific island. She worked in the Island dispensary as a nurse?s aide and at first was appalled with the pain and suffering of the patients, especially the pregnant women and girls. Death was a frequent event with the patients whose families moved into the hospital rooms and stayed with the sick family member, sleeping on the bare floors. She worked with and for another former Peace Corps volunteer who thought she was his girl and tried to control this free spirited lively and friendly young woman. An older Marshallese woman who taught her the Marshallese customs and ways adopted her and took her everywhere with her. The local people came to adopt her too. They liked her kindness and helpfulness. She never admonished them or was harsh with them. She was just trying to be helpful and her concern for them and their hurt children was readily apparent. The nearby island of Kwajalein with the military base and the only airport was a nice diversion and attraction. There were also young military officers and civilian technicians on that island who were intent on wooing her. It was an unreal unnatural situation but a nice one. She was able to do minor spying which improved her grandmother?s living situation. She was on the periphery when a black box in one nose cone of an incoming ICBM missile splashed into the lagoon just before a typhoon hit. Did the Russians send in a mini sub and spirit the black box away? Maybe. Which suitor won her heart, married her and whisked her away? It must have been the right one.
