He?d already lived for 6 years on a tropical island with a military base and was into his second island wife, the first was from Pohnpei. The family of his second island wife offered him land to use on Emidj Island, Jaluit Atoll for a tourist resort. Twice he was given a very special ?welcome to the islands? party by the older island women for someone they wanted to become a member of their community, which was given on rare occasions and almost never to a foreigner. He leased his wife?s family land from Kabua Kabua, grandson of Kabua Kabua the great and the last of the hereditary kings of the Marshall Islands. During the one year he lived on Emidj, he built 12 pandannus thatched tourist cottages on concrete platforms. He enjoyed the carefree island life and became immerged in the culture of life on the islands. The Marshallese people had survived well for over 5,000 years on almost barren coral tipped volcano tops. The intricacies of life on an island were amazing and complex. Taboos were logical and reasonable but constricting. Life on an island is totally different from that on the mainland and is far from carefree. He enjoyed swimming and snorkeling in the lagoon watching the vividly colored fish dart in and through bright corals. The delightful young women, plentitude of fresh fish and magnificent daily sunsets made life enjoyable much of the time. He was forced to learn patience while waiting for workers and supplies to come and typhoons to go away. He knew what being stranded on an island during a violent typhoon was like. He became an island trader taking grocery and other merchandise by boat across the lagoon to trade for pandannus thatch and iron wood poles for his cottages. He got a sudden rude and wet awakening when his unsinkable Boston Whaler sank under him with a load of ironwood poles and pandannus thatch. He was the victim of unruly local youths bent on stealing, destruction, and arson. His landlord died and the successor evicted him as he was caught up in a new wave of desire of the Marshallese people to get all foreigners out of their country. While practicing patience after the arson, he built a fire proof pumice stone cottage with a cool pandannus thatched roof under a tin roof, harvested coconuts and made copra, and waited for the annual visit of the cargo ship to take what he could salvage of merchandise and building material inventories back to Majuro to sell and recoup cash. While he waited, he enjoyed plenty of fresh tuna when the yellow fin were running and marvelously colored sunsets as he ate the grilled yellow fin tuna. His only other choice in his circumstances would have been to abandon everything and fly away thereby only saving his own skin. But, he stayed for the ship?s arrival and minimized his losses. He left Emidj Island looking forward and not back at the lovely island with lots of lush green vegetation and the pandannus thatched cottages he?d built. He?d survived a fantastic adventure few others ever dreamed. He had his memories and his life. He could go on to other adventures. Those island life reality shows don?t present what island live is really like. And, he knew that. He?d learned to laugh when the large semi wild pigs fell into his pit latrine at night and couldn?t get out. He?d also learned to laugh and participate in the group game when the fun loving local practical jokers gave a new comer a large bowl of delicious pandannus pudding knowing that in a few hours the poor soul would embark on a three day event of constant dysenteryy. With time, the bad and painful events faded and the good and enjoyable events remained to savor.
