The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
(Douglas Adams)
The idea of this book originally started off as a radio show. But, over the last 20 years it has become one of the most successful science fiction novels written. It is not the story nor the imagination, which is the main attraction of this story, but the style of writing. Douglas Adams has given a hilarious account of the misadventures of Arthue Dent in the galaxy, which is not only vast, but also bamboozlingly mysterious. The story starts with bad day in the life of a looser, Arthur Dent. His house is about to torn down to build an expressway. But, just when he thinks his life couldn't have gone any worse, he learns that his friend, Ford Prefect, is actually an alien from another planet who is updating a book named, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. To add the icing to the cake Ford announces that the earth is going to be destroyed in 5 minutes. However, both of them escape as they hitch a ride in the spacecraft of the destroyers of the planet. What follows, is an adventure of galactic proportions. From the escape from the lethal, yet poetic aliens, to the company of the extra-terrestrial fugitive, Zaphold Beeblebrox and his prize, The Improbabilty Machine to the mentally depressed android, Marvin, Arthur discovers the entire universe, including the mystery behind the creation of earth. Although in some parts the the explainations might seem silly, Adams' witty style more than makes up for the entire loopholes. The reader cant help but chuckle, giggle and in some places hold their stomachs and start laughing. As far as books of humor goes, this one is certainly there in the class of P.G. Wodehouse. So, go ahead and enjoy the journey through space, time and planets. But, be warned, do keep your intellectual self closed, otherwise you will not find this book appealing enough.
