The Invisible Man
(H.G. Wells)
How far can one?s anger drive him? How strong can a human being?s rage be? And how realistic is this story of H. G. Wells, the master of science fiction? The Invisible Man crosses all boundaries of the human imagination from its start to its tantalizing ending. The story examines in a straight forward yet complex manner what happens when a man who loses his physical appearance (becomes invisible) tries to lead a so called normal life. The narrative deals with the protagonist?s (or more appropriate- the antagonist?s) own scientific experiments and explorations which led to his invisibility. On his way to get his appearance back he encounters not only human beings but also the human nature. People?s reactions to the unknown and unseen present the readers with a harsh glance into their own character. While reading what these people do, one can hardly keep his objectiveness. One is immediately sent to ask himself what he would have done in a similar situation. And the answers are not always easy to accept. An additional aspect, not less intense than the crowd?s reactions, is the transformation that the main character goes through. It is not only the quest back to the visible world (a physical transformation), but also the psychological metamorphosis he experiences. Being at times totally unnoticed and at others relentlessly hunted, he is thrown to emotional and mental extremes. And it is not difficult to trace mutual points with our everyday experiences; sometimes we would wish to be unseen, but at other times we would cry for some attention and acknowledgement of our existence. These two poles can place humans in difficult situations and this text exemplifies how difficult it is to be in one?s invisible shoes. It is a short reading but it will open a long discussion.
