Dress Your Family In Corduroy And Denim
(David Sedaris)

Publicidade
Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim is my second Sedaris book. I am officially a fan and I am on the lookout for anything new he writes. You have to get used to Sedaris' work. For me it took a couple of chapters to get warmed up. Then when I really got him, I was in for a ride. This book, similar to Me Talk Pretty One Day, is autobiographical. Short stories of his life and his family are sprinkled in no particular order. Sometimes he leaves it up to the reader to figure out the place, time and age. It's more fun that way. Good art is mysterious and when it comes to writing, the blend between mystery and just enough detail is the key ingredient in any good novel. David is a genius at that.

Sedaris has a humor that you haven't met with before. It is very sharp and bright and it strikes when you least expect it. It slips onto the page that you barely notice it. Sometimes you even wonder if it?s truly there. In a French way, his humor says, Excuse moi, but can I make you laugh? Just like any good humor, it has to be a little painful, maybe too real so that we can laugh instead of cry. His stories about his family and his life are simple, normal maybe, but somehow interesting. It's because he makes them interesting, just like he could make a novel out of anybody's life.

Even more touching is the simple words with which he tells his stories. It?s easy to identify with it all. Maybe your family was that way, or maybe you had an awkward period in your twenties when you were trying to find yourself, or maybe you thought your relationship with your loved one was a mess, but now that you read David?s book, you realize that it is just fine. Everything is just the way it should be. David Sedaris shares his life openly with all of us and it brings a comfort to the reader that this is not a fiction book, but somebody?s life. Someone really walked in those shoes and thought those things. Someone out there is just like you.
The ability to identify with other human beings is what makes an artist a good artist. After all, people want to see in art something that they have, something that they found perhaps and they want to see it glorified. And if you give them that gratification, they will be loyal to your work. Sedaris has done that, sometimes brings you to tears, both of laughter and sadness, and sometimes he's just so damn good that you can't help but admire his craft and say to yourself Finally! Someone discovered this guy.
