My Amercan Journey
(Colin Powell)
The only one dove in the first Bush's Administration, probably he paid, as sometimes happens in the history, for the mistakes of the hawks. It is strong the suspect of many people his speech at the UN Security Council to back the US intervention overthrowing the never found mass destruction weapons was fatal to his political career ,notwithstanding the rumors he retired because of medical problems. To read now his biography dedicated to his military career, from the first support to the Vietnamese Army to the most important military engagements of US in the world, from the Irangate to the Panama invasion, from the Desert Storm to Restore Hope is much more important than at its appearence on 1996 to evaluate the deep humanity of this big man. We don't remember the single steps until to the appointment to the JCS and finally to the nevralgic role of National Security Adviser, but two importants events of his life: the first one is the change of his vote fom the Democratic to the Republican Party on 1990, immediaterly after the failure of Desert One, the tragic operation to save the US hostages in Teheran ordered by the President Carter. To give vent to his rage for the tragic end of a military action to whom he forecasted the probability of success 1ws.100 he was writing an ironic guide how to communicate desasters to the citizens. The second is the satisfaction with the American people for the success with a few losses of the the first operation in Irak under Bush Senior, when the American people enjoyed victory after the long agony in the Asian Southeast. He never kept secrets two details: his birth in the poor Bronx and its maximum care for the safety of the troops in the action, two features however linked. His political experience began with the assistance to the meetings Reagan/Gorbachov but his reward arrives when the President Clinton asked him to replace the State Secretary Warren Christofer,an offer he declined. Many people hoped he can become the new US President:however he was writing in the last rows of his book that politics is the art of the compromise, but his choice was do not make compromise only to be affiliated to a Party or to another one.
