The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
(Douglas Adams)
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy was a British radio show that became an instant classic. This interstellar adventure by Douglas Adams follows the life of d'Arthur Dent, a Brit, during which the universe is revealed to him in its true form. With the aid of his friend Ford Prefect, a native of Betelgeuse who had been stranded on Earth for 15 years, Arthur leaves Earth before it is destroyed by the Vogons to make way for an interstellar bypass and learns how to hitchhike between planets and galaxies. Prefect is a roving reporting for the famous encyclopedia, the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, a comical and forthright book for all who wish to travel in the universe. During his adventures (which continue in the following books: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe, and Everything, So Long and Thanks for all the Fish, and Mostly Harmless), Arthur becomes friends with a depressed robot, an egotistical fellow with two heads, a spaceship with an opinion, and many other interesting characters. He learns not only that the Earth isn't the only place to find intelligent life, but also that the universe avoids it, for being passé. Douglas Adams?s style is light and amusing and is embedded with ingenious comparisons and wordgames. He delivers his impeccable British wit with the humour and grace of a Dave Berry column. But, nothing is lost of plot! The action is exciting and the social commentary (non-partisan) is hilarious. Other than the volumes in this set, he wrote many other books such as Starship Titanic (with Terry Jones of Monty Python), Dirk Gently?s Holistic Detective Agency, The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul, and Salmon of Doubt (published after his death). Highly recommended if you otherwise like Terry Pratchett, Dave Barry, Monthy Python, Red Dwarf, Mr. Bean, Star Wars, or Star Trek. YOU WILL LAUGH OUT LOUD ? I promise.
