Little Earthquakes
(Jennifer Weiner)

Publicidade
Jennifer Weiner's new novel, Little Earthquakes, was a decent read. The story encompasses the lives of four very different women and details their problems and triumphs with each of their respective pregnancies.

Little Earthquakes was warm and endearing, with character that seemed as flawed as they were fantastic. As a fan of the Chick Lit genre, I feel that Little Earthquakes stands out as one of the best. The women are strong though they each show their weaknesses, and though they were strangers at the beginning of the book, they came to lean on each other the way many women do.

I particularly like the way Weiner chooses to depict the characters towards the end. In several chapters, the reader learns that each woman can pick out things in the lives of her friends that makes her own situation seem like a cakewalk - from a lost child to a cheating husband to weight problems and work problems. I think this is a real-life account of the way best friends interract, and the way life seems to show itself through the eyes of another.

One thing that I did not like about the book was that Weiner wrote one character in first person and the rest in third person. This made the transitions seem a bit harder to handle to me, and I had to go back and re-read a few pages sometimes to make sure I knew who was who. It was tactful, and I can see why Weiner did this for that particular character, but it was a bit hard on the flow.

Pregnancy, childbirth and new motherhood proved to be an excellent plot for a heart-warming book. Little Earthquakes should be read by every woman who has wanted to be pregnant, been pregnant, or had a baby. And a husband. And a career. As well as those who have lost children. It is a touching tale.
