In a world starved of spiritualism, Coelho makes has made his millions writing a book that takes you everywhere and nowhere at the same time. The travails of the young shephard is full of pseudo spiritualism that feels very deep but is illusional as all things psuedo. The book makes an interesting read and fills u with outdated philosophies like omens and dreams. You begin to find yourself in the young shephard as he goes in search of the hidden fortune following vague omens. You will emphatise with him when he confidently travels from Spain to Africa. You will will him ahead when he gives up everything he has to reach the Pyramids in Egypt. But then two days after you have finished reading, you will realise that it meant nothing, there is no real knowledge in the book that can be turned into gold. The only piece of alchemistry is that Coelho has transformed his words into gold and made millions.
To Coelho's credit, not only is he a skillful writer, he knows the business of writing well. Surely, a book that is vague is sure to succeed as every reader makes his/her own interpretations. The more intelligent the reader, the more profound his interpretation. It also makes a great conversation piece... 'I have read Coelho's The Alchemist' so i should be ranked along with the intellectuals. You can learn a few of Coelho's profound expressions and repeat them with your most intelligent stare and sure to gain the admiration and respect of the opposite sex. In other words Coelho's The alchemist is a 'good read' if you are intellectual and a 'must read' if u r not. A great formula for success!
