Paradise Lost
(Milton)

Publicidade
Father of Lies

In ?justify the ways of God to man (Book I line 26), Milton?s Paradise Lost gives the reader a God that is omniscient (Book III l.78) and omnipotent (Book II l.198; Book IX. l. 927; Book I. l. 273). This God, ?who reigns Monarch in Heaven? (Book I ll. 637-38), is the creator (369) of Satan and ?many Legions of Angels? (Book I Argument). In creating Satan, God formed him ?beyond Compare of mortal prowess? (Book I l. 588). Satan is ?above the rest in shape? (589-90), his ?gesture proudly eminent like a Tow?r? (590-91), ?his heart Distends with pride? (571-72). Satan is created by ?the fixt Laws of Heav?n? (Book II l. 18) and has ?free choice? (19), free will.
Yet, it is by Satan?s free will, created by an ?Omnipotent, Immutable, Immortal, Infinite, Eternal King; thee Author of all being? (Book III l.372-74) who also ?created evil? (Book II l. 623), that man is to be deceived. Man, who is made inferior to both God and Satan, is foreknown to ?fall deceived? (Book III l. 130) while simultaneously being made ?sufficient to have stood? (99). It is this same evil, often disguised as hypocrisy, that only God can discern; and, in which Satan actively participates (Book III l. 634; Book V l. 34-94). God wants man to resist this hypocrisy as ?sole pledge of his obedience? (Book III l. 95), as ?proof?of true allegiance? (Book III l.103-4) to Him. Eve ?could?st not have discerned Fraud in the Serpent? (Book X l. 1149-50), and ?neither Man nor Angel can discern Hypocrisy, the only evil that walks invisible, except to God alone? (Book IV l. 682-84). With the aforementioned in mind, it is not farfetched to surmise that man is not equipped to sufficiently battle with Satan and his hypocrisy. Milton?s God, creator of Satan, allows Satan to be His vehicle by which deception and lies reach man.
In reading Paradise Lost, I could not refrain from getting involved with the epic. I argued with Milton because he forced me to question my religious training. I also applauded him for giving me a safe vehicle by which I could reevaluate and ascertain what I really believe. I was ashamed that at times I sided with Satan and was against God. Paradise Lost was written in 1667. It still is a very powerful literary work. I have enjoyed my first reading of the text with plans to read it again as I continue to search for truth and relevance to the life that my personal God has given to me.
