Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince
(J.K. Rowling)
This is the last published novel of the Harry Potter series; in this book the readers will accompany this famous wizard through his six year in Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. During this year Harry and his friends will be confronted with different situations (i.e.: love, mysterious attacks, etc) and different decisions that will change their perception of the world as the come of age. This a coming of age book in which the main characters are more and more involved with the adult world and have to take difficult harsh decisions that can change their future. In this book, J.K. Rowling comes back to the previous books formula blending humour chapters and more serious ones. Although humorously, the novel begins presenting its reader a world of war against Voldemort who has decided to attack openly after the events in the Department of Mysteries described in the fifth book. The war is present throughout the whole book, always hinted in form of deaths, sudden attacks within Hogwarts walls, etc, so that the reader never forgets that Voldemort is attacking and creating chaos. However, the book is of course focused in Harry Potter's adventures. After his summer holidays Harry gets back to Hogwarts to begin his six year of education, a year full of surprises, mysteries and important discoveries. As he is approaching his final years of education, this year?s studies are more difficult and demanding more and more of his free time as he has to understand the principles and basics of the magic he creates. Apart from his normal classes, Harry has private tutor classes with Dumbledore, under this last request, in which he will travel to the past through different character's memories so he learns of Tom Riddle's past live also learning of his character, manias and so forth. Some events and mysterious attacks to his Gryffindor friends, lead Harry to believe that his arch-nemesis Draco Malfoy not only is a Death Eater but he is planning something, some kind of bastard action to help his master the Dark Lord. Obviously preoccupied, he informs both his head of house Professor McGonagall and the headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Soon this idea becomes an obsession that irritates his friends Ron and Hermione. As the time elapses, Harry discovers that Severus Snape is helping Draco Malfoy with his plans which lead him to suspect of his most hated professor; due to this distrust Harry has some rows with Professor Dumbledore as this last totally trust Severus Snape. But who is right Harry or Dumbledore? In this book we are given a deeper insight of other characters apart from Harry Potter himself. Albus Dumbledore who from the beginning is weaker than he was in the previous books, in the book we can hear some rumours of Dumbledore losing his strength, reflexes, etc, but he is also presented as an old wise man who has learned great thing through the years. We are also given a glimpse of Severus Snape's character outside Hogwarts walls. Finally, we will get to know the real Draco Malfoy, a scared boy of sixteen years that is compelled to do something he is not capable of doing. Harry Potter is presented as an obsessive, stubborn person, maybe too stubborn for his own good as when he accepts an unknown book with handwritten tips and nasty hexes, but at the end he learns numerous lessons such as humility as he accepts that he was wrong in one of his many assumptions
