Harry Potter And The Half-blood Prince
(J.K. Rowling)

In this, the sixth installment of the ubiquitous Harry Potter series, author J.K. Rowling does the unthinkable, something that many skeptics were unsure that she could accomplish. She manages to make this book even better than her last offering, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

In this book, Harry must deal with the death of his godfather, Sirius Black (who was killed in Order of the Phoenix), a very demanding sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, being captain of the Gryffindor house quidditch team, and an unexpected crush (he is a sixteen year-old, after all). Though Half-Blood Prince is not quite as thick as its predecessor, Order of the Phoenix, it is still very much action-packed.

Not only is Half-Blood Prince intensely entertaining, it is also extremely well-written. Rowling does an excellent job of writing Harry as a child who has no parents, no authority figures who he can depend on; and who is wrestling with the idea of either remaining a child or allowing himself to grow up prematurely. Rowling also does a phenomenal job of turning the wizarding world from one of childish whimsy and wonder (as it was in Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets) into a darker and more dangerous world. She began this transformation in Prisoner of Azkaban with the inclusion of dementors, creatures who lured their victims into a catatonic-like state by making them relive their worst memories. She brings that transformation to a head here, with darker foes, like inferi, which are corpses who have been bewitched by Lord Voldemort's army of Death Eaters to do his bidding. Rowling also uses the Imperius curse, which is used to make living people do the bidding of Voldemort, to create an atmosphere where nothing is sacred and no one is safe.

Though the magic and wizarding world are both entertaining, the core of this book is relationships. Rowling expertly portrays the relationship between Harry and his best friends Ron Weasly and Hermione Granger, and how the dynamics of this relationship are changing now that they are older. The feuds that Harry has with fellow student, Draco Malfoy, and teacher, Severus Snape, also come to a dramatic head.

Half-Blood Prince is a fantastic book in its own right, but it is also a very important book in the context of the complete Harry Potter series. After all, this is the sixth book in a series of seven. With the setup of the seventh book given at the end of this one, I'm sure it will be a very interesting conclusion to a wonderful series.
