My Darling Elia
(Eugenie Melnyk)
It is rare to stumble upon a novel that you can recommend to everyone, no matter what tastes. "My Darling Elia" one heart felt story of eternal love, it is also a reminder of our horrific past and a lesson in what we should strive to become. With the miraculous find of his beloved wife's locket, at a local flea market, Elia Strohan's horrific and romantic life tale begins to unfold. Through a series of flashbacks, Elia recounts his journey to the ladies that sell the locket. They are soon mesmerized by his words and take it upon themselves to help the search. From the separation of his wife, in Germany 1941, to his survival of Jewish death camps, to his present day, Elia has spent his whole life searching for his love of his life, his wife. Its explicit details of war and the inhumanity of concentration camps can be overwhelming but its authentic principles and powerful sense of hope blend perfectly. This sweat and sometimes graphic tale does shred a dark shade throughout but with such a melodramatic theme, of love will never die, the hope of the protagonist becomes contagious. This is a hard book to put down. Thankfully, the ending, although shocking, does not disappoint. Personally, I found myself desiring the truth of Elia?s wife?s disappearance and the reunion of the two lovers, whether it is possible or not. I have recommended and purchased this book for many people now, none of whom have been disappointed. Eugenie Melnyk, from Montreal, dedicated over ten years for her life on this important novel, only to pass on upon the publication. The story feels genuine and it is easy to forget that it is only a novel. This book is built from a lot of care and its pages reeks of love for its characters, its historical accuracy and its message. It is comforting to know that books of this caliber still exist.
