Lord Of The Flies
(William Golding)
Lord of the Flies reminds me of king of the mountain, a game I played as a child. Each person attemptd to be the king of the mountain while others in our play group attempted to dethrone him. The more a person wanted to be the king the more aggressively he fought. The more leadership minded the individual boys in Lord of the Flies were, the more vicious the attacks that lead to the eventual murder of two of the boys. The stark reality of life sets in quickly as the boys who had gone from being saturated with strict rules before the plane crash to no rules at all while they are stranded on the pacific island. Each of the boys struggle with their own conflicting beliefs between the now and their previous life and the other boys. As the time they spend stranded lengthens, their true characters win out as most of the boys give in to their basal desires. After the first killing of the pig for food, the violence on the island escalates until the first of the boys, Simon who represents their conscience, is killed during a bonfire to celebrate their first successful pig hunt. The final act of savagery takes place when justice, in the form of Piggy, is killed. It becomes clearer as the story progresses that Golding has captured the true nature of boys that do not have the boundaries dictated by the society from which they came. Theirs is a society true to will of the perceived strength, the protector. It is the hunter who wins out instead of the intelligent, fair, sensible or the trusted. It is this perception that enabled the group to hunt the final member who remained and refused to join the side of the hunters. Because of the pure savagery that presents itself in each of the hunters, I am not surprised by the response of the captain who finally locates the lost boys. As Ralph comes barrelling through the forest to his feet to escape the hunters chasing him, the captain apparently believing himself to be in danger, places his hand on his side arm. The captain seems to recognize that the boys coming out of the jungle may not be civilized any longer.
