A Raisin In The Sun

Whenever I think of A Raisin in the Sun, I find myself thinking of a dream deferred. Each member had a cross to bear and each had to decide what to do with that cross. They could take it, shoulder it and walk on to their destiny or toss it aside. It took a long time for Walter and his family to realize the dream of having a better life while not turning their backs on family. And each member had to make their own decision about their cross.
In any family, a strong leader makes the other members stronger. In A Raisin, the mother, was a strong matriarch. But she realized that for Walter to become a man, not only for his nuclear family but also for his extended family, he must be allowed to shoulder the responsibility for that family. Although he does not originally make the right choice, he understands that his family is leaning on his strength and that he can not afford to act without a conscience or selfishly. This is the way it is in all families. No one member can act without a conscience and have that family survive. Sometimes dreams must be delayed or changed in order for the whole family to prosper. Once Walter and his family realized this, they could move on and enjoy the life they wanted for themselves and each other. This experience is what builds a strong family.
Have you ever really looked at a raisin? There are small wrinkles or hills and crevices that over take it. This not a bad thing. Think of where the raisin originated, the grape. The grape has a smooth surface and if you compare it to life, there are no ups and downs, no experiences to form it. It is through these ups and downs and experiences, that character is developed and strength is obtained. Once the grape is dried (not necessarily in the sun), it develops more character and the raisin is formed. A Raisin in the Sun is like the smooth grape that is transformed into that small wrinkled raisin. It is like that dream defered until a better time. The experience of the characters is what gives this play strength.
