Civilization And The Limpet
(Martin Wells)
Martin Wells: Civilization and the Limpet. Perseus Books, Massachusetts, 1998. This is a fascinating reading Book for nature lovers, divers and all that admire oceans. Wells is a marine biologist and his book deals with the secrets and mysteries of all the living things in the sea. Reading the book is fascinating from the first page on; the titles of the 25 chapters (?Hot fish?, ?Drinking seawater?, ?Crawling up walls and walking on water?, to name a few) give an impression of the random walks through marine life. The marine world is so different from our terrestrial world that everybody gets fascinated by viewing whales, sea urchins, or animals of the deep sea. There are many simple questions about life in the sea: how does diving of fish work? How do they deal with increased pressure on their bodies if they go deeper and deeper? Each chapter depicts one aspect of life in oceans and can be read by itself. There are animals that change sex during their lifetime and there are animals that go flash in the night. In between these fascinating little stories, Wells does not forget to send a clear message to the readers: our adverse influence on the sea and the necessity of taking care of the oceans. Finally, many people make their living of products from the sea. The book deserves a wide readership and is a wonderful reading for vacation. Wells writes in his preface: ?I believe life is more interesting if you know what is going on around you?. Readers learn a lot of what is going on in the sea by reading this book.
