Othello. Was he a man or a mouse? A hero or a louse?
He was in love with the love of his life and yet could not keep her. He knew their love was strong and eternal. Theirs was the first interracial marriage written about of that time. Marriages such as these are difficult to maintain as all marriages are without the added difficulties of someone else's beliefs in the rightness of it. Knowing that, although he was a decorated war hero, he should have realized that his skin color could still cause him trouble. He should have realized that his home was where he would find solace, understanding and truth. It was what he lived for and yet he was not man enough to keep it.
Difficult times causes a man to stand up and a mouse to hide. Othello did not take a stand. He hid behind his own insecurities. His own uncertainties about why someone so wonderful could and would love him, a black man. He forgot who he was, thereby forgetting his worthiness of the love he had found. It became easy for his companions to destroy his trust in his beloved as they knew it would. A simple misunderstanding and misguided trust drew Othello into an extreme cowardly act. His role as protector fell away as the love of his life threw herself on his mercy and his love. And he chose to forget who he was, protector of the weak instead of the defender of his own selfish pride.
This man in disquise took away the only person who loved and saw him for who he was. The only one who did not see the color of his skin but the quality of his heart. He took away the one woman strong enough to love him regardless how society saw him. She put her heart and life on a platter before him and he recklessly threw them both, his pearls, to the pigs. In his weakness, he destroy an innocent life.
