The main protoganist Arthur Dent has been presented as a sort of cosmic character. An ordinnary man thrust into an extraordinary circumstance of trying to save planet Krikkit. The inhabitants of the planet become tired of looking at the night sky above their heads and so they plan to destroy it. Five characters try to prevent the white killer robots of Krikkit who are trying to destroy the Universe. There are five main characters who liven up the narration .Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Slartibartfast, Zapphod Beeblebrox, and Trillian. Arthur Dent is a mild-mannered character who tries in vain to learn how to fly by throwing himself at the ground. Ford embraces insanity. The Vice President of the campaign is Lartbartfast. He travels in a ship which behaves irrationally. He two-headed, three-armed Beeblebrox who is supposed to be the former Head of the Universes seems very depressed. Can we call Trillian a sexy space cadet who is torn between Thunder God and Beeblebrox? Arthur Dent stands out as a loving, caring, truly good man. There is warmth and joy in each character as they unfold themselves.
This book has been made in to BBC teleseries which is fanatically faithful to the original text. This continues on with the story of The Restaurant at the End of the Universe which gives us a chance to understand the author better.
