The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy
(Douglas Adams)
A trilogy in........four parts? ?Goodbye, and thanks for all the fish?, the entire population of Earth?s dolphins politely chant, as a final farewell to the planet?s third most intelligent species, man. Just in time, as they are beamed up to their intergalactic spaceship and flown off at warp speed. Anyone who has never saw, heard or read any of the myriad of adaptations Adams rewrote for stage, screen, radio and paperback, will be totally bemused at this point.Douglas Adams? first airing of ?Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy? was in 1978 as a radio broadcast and has since become a sci-fi masterwork sitting astride a strong undercurrent of madcap humour. The story centralises around an ordinary Englishman named Arthur Dent. One day the council decides to build a road through his house and while he is considering having a heart attack, his long-term friend, Ford Prefect tells him that he?s an alien. Of course, this is met with much derision from Dent, until a fleet of Vogon warships appear overhead to destroy the Earth.Prefect then uses his upturned thumb to hitch a ride for the pair aboard a Vogon vessel. Safely aboard, Dent watches in utter amazement as the Earth is vaporised before his eyes. Adams? referrals and definitions in the intergalactic guide to hitchhiking, called, ?The Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy? is a constant source of humour and a pointed source of sarcasm amidst the mayhem. For instance, to enable Dent to understand intergalactic languages Ford Prefect stuffs a fish in his ear. Dent reads the book for a full rundown of how this works with concise electronic images of dos and don?ts and recommendations. Eventually, as the mayhem increases the book?s frequent definitions act as a narrative to the story. With flashbacks to his time on Earth, Dent had met a girl at a party and was filled with remorse at the prospect of never seeing her again. On that night, Dent was usurped by an unusual individual who claimed to be the President of the Galaxy. Whilst trying to escape the horrid( poem loving) Vogons, Dent and Ford escape almost certain death, and hitch a ride in a stolen star-ship ? only to be greeted by the girl from the party, Trillian?? and Dent?s usurper, the President of the Galaxy! An inept romance ensues with Dent initially afraid to make waves for the ?couple?, but also to express his own feelings, whilst trying to win a psychological battle of wills with the President (Zaphod Beeblebrox, Ford?s semi-cousin it turns out)! Later, Adams does a hilarious, almost ?Pythonesque? piece within the book about the answer to the ultimate question to life, the universe and everything, from the supercomputer deep thought. After seven and a half million years it comes up with the answer, 42. Wonder what the Hitchhiker?s guide would say the answer is?Overall this novel turns conventional thinking on its head, with its foray into uncharted assumptions that the Earth and everything on it was created not only for the powerful ones who live here. There is a strong message within the story, and character traits underline government and religious control over society of that era, especially when, at the end Dent realises that the insignificant, the mice, do really have control.
