Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution
(Robert C. Atkins)
Unless you've been living under a rock for the last twenty years, you've undoubtedly heard or read somewhere about the Atkins diet. The core idea behind the Atkins diet is that you diet without sacrificing most of the foods you love. The Diet Revolution, as Atkins calls it, while seemingly just another in an endless sea of diet plans that will inevitably fail, has maintained its longevity through a very appealing set of rules and beliefs. A diet plan that encourages high carbohydrate intake means you can have that pizza that's helped you fail so many other weight loss programs. In the book Dr. Atkins goes into great detail on how he came about his dietary epiphany, what types of food are best utilized by the program, and the life changes that a serious diet plan requires. It is in this book, the first of two, that Atkins introduces the carbohydrate allergy theory, arguing that obese people have a much harder time processing carbohydrate energy in an efficient way than the average metabolic system. One thing that made this book stand out from countless, nameless diet plans is that it's not just the same old rehash of salad and bread diets which have frustrated a great many on their quest to a target weight. The book, while biased, does point out the flaws of high calorie dieting, and backs most every statement with valid scientific proof, a true rarity in the diet industry. Throughout the book there are in depth and customizable meal plans, recipes, and support that will help make the Atkins' diet one that people will stick to for the long haul. As with any diet plan, there have been nay-sayers. Critics of the Atkins' diet warn that the diet has a few adverse effects on its participants, including a higher risk of heart problems. In 1973 Dr. Atkins fought the criticism this book brought by giving a testimony before the U.S. Senate Select committee on Nutrition and Human needs. He chose to not fight the charges of risk directly, but included that almost any diet plan involves risk, and no dietary plans should be embarked upon without proper medical supervision.
