Far From The Madding Crowd
(Thomas Hardy)
True to its title which has been taken from Thomas Gray?s ?Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard?, the novel ?Far From the Madding Crowd? is author Thomas Hardy?s attempt to show a contrast between modern city life and the rustic village life. The novel shows Hardy?s love for the simple, village life away from the industrial mad life of towns and cities. Bathsheba, the main female protagonist, has three suitors in the novel-all loving her in their different ways. But it is Gabriel Oak, in the end, who turns out to be a winner in his selfless and devoted pursuit and love for Bathsheba. The story begins with the beautiful but without a fortune, Bathsheba Everdene, meeting a young farmer Gabriel Oak. She saves Gabriel?s life once and he falls in love with her asking her to marry him. She refuses as she does not love him and leaves the place when she inherits her uncle?s farm in the town of Weatherbury. In the meantime, Gabriel loses all his sheep due to a disaster that befalls on his farm and is left ruined, without anything to sustain life. He leaves the town looking for work when accidentally he lands in the same place as Bathsheba. He saves a local farm from fire and the farm turns out to be that of Bathsheba only. He requests her to hire him for looking after the farm as he desperately needs work. Bathsheba hires her. She also gets aquainted with her haughty and proud neighbor, Mr. Boldwood, who is quite a rage among women due to his position and wealth. But he is also known for rejecting any proposals or interest shown by women. Bathsheba sends him a valentine card with the words ?marry me? written on it out of a whim. Mr. Boldwood is totally smitten by Bathsheba after this and becomes obsessed with her thoughts. He proposes marriage to her but she refuses saying she does not love him. The very same night, Bathsheba gets acquainted with Sergeant Troy, a handsome soldier who falls in love with her. She too seems to have taken a liking to him and even travels to Bath with him. Al this really enrages Boldwood who loves Bathsheba no end and cannot accept her rejection of him. Troy manages to convince her to marry him and they both get married. What Bathsheba does not know is the true devilish nature of Troy who has already spoilt the life of a local girl Fanny Robin by making her fall in his trap and getting her pregnant with his child. Gabriel warns Bathsheba of the consequences of marrying Troy as a true friend, but nevertheless she marries Troy. After sometime, Troy comes across Fanny, poor and sick, who dies giving birth to a child. This secret is discovered by Bathsheba who is very unhappy as Troy completely changes in his attitude towards her after marriage. When Troy comes to know about Fanny?s death and the child, he feels repentant and grief-stricken. In this state of grief, he runs away leaving Bathsheba behind and people think he is drowned on seeing his clothes on the shore. This makes Boldwood very happy as he can now pursue his proposal of marriage to Bathsheba once again. He proposes to her again and Bathsheba promises to consider his proposal. Troy, who is considered dead by everyone, sees Bathsheba in a fair once and plans to return back to her. On the night of the Christmas party thrown by Boldwood where he again proposes to Bathsheba and she accepts the proposal, Troy appears thus shocking and surprising everyone. When Troy is about to take Bathsheba with him, Boldwood, angry and enraged, shoots at Troy, killing him on the spot. Boldwood is sent to prison and this leaves Bathsheba alone and full of grief. At this time, Gabriel come to her rescue and takes care of her. She finally marries him and they settle down to a calm and peaceful life.
