A Study In Scarlet
(Arthur Conan Doyle)

Publicidade
When I first read "A Study in Scarlet",my first story of Arthur Conan Doyle, it being the first chapter in the book, I couldn't imagine how a man with no knowledge about the 9 planets of the solar system, deduce from merely looking at a person that he had been to Afghanistan. But when he explained how he had come to the conclusion, it seemed so frivolous as how we ignore the subtle things which could have given us the bigger picture. As we proceed further into the story I was immensely surprised by the deductions being made from the mundane things being found at the crime spot. When Holmes was deducting genuine statements from the clues left behind by the perpetrator we also see how normal human beings, here two policemen Gregson and Lestrade , would deduct from the same. Seeing how things were going on I was on the verge of recommending Sherlock Holmes to be made a mandatory reading exercise for detectives around the world to learn the art of deduction. But as I wasn't in a position to be able to implement the same, I thought it better to continue with my reading exercise. As I proceeded deeper into the story I was also impressed by how the crimes were being performed and clues being left behind so as to derail the investigation to the perpetrator's liking. And the ingenuity being showed by Jefferson Hope in going about killing his preys also makes us think why is this happening. And finally when Jefferson Hope was caught we cann't but marvel how this guy goes about his work without flinching a muscle except his brains. And then finally we get to know why all this was happening in the second part when John Ferrier comes into the act. His rescue at the hand of the Mormons, his rise from a simple farmer to a rich one, how Lucy Ferrier grows upto be a madien, desired by the younger Stangerson and Drebber, how she fells in love with Hope, how Ferrier despises the Elders ordering him to marry off his adopted daughter only within the Mormons, how they plan their escape from Utah and their fateful ending and why Hope was on the murder mission. We cann't but get surprised by the dexterity of the author in putting an investigative mind in the first part and then showing of his hold on the subtle human feeling of love.
I sincerely tried my hand on deductions but found myself a total failure like Watson, who as a character in the story shows us a true picture of our conclusions which we would have made. This helps us in comparing the brains of both Holmes(Doyle) and Watson(ourselves) and makes us think how we could have ignored the obvious.
