Five Point Someone
(Chetan Bhagat)
One would think that once one makes it past the grueling and rather infamous IIT entrance exam that it would be easy to keep pace. Well, it turns out that not all the students are geniuses, some work ungodly hours at keeping up with the tremendous course load and intense competition and others, well, they decide to take in the atmosphere and experience of it all, good and bad. Chetan Bhagat?s book is not a manual of how to get into IIT, nor is it the standard of how things are done at this institution. It is merely a retelling of his experiences with the traditions, the pressures, the rating system of the institution and friendships formed. The book opens to one of the most time-honored traditions at IIT Delhi, ragging. The seniors club together the protagonist, Hari Singh, with two other freshmen Ryan and Alok, thus setting the stage for a lasting friendship between the three on the very first day at IIT. All three come from different backgrounds, socially, financially and culturally, yet they are able to connect with each other through their new goal, graduating from IIT with a good GPA. As they struggle with the heavy and unending course load, pop quizzes, research projects and laboratory work, they discover that life should be lived at the moment. Although IIT demands heavily of the students time they decide to take matters into their own hands and share each subject?s course load to minimize the time spent on attending classes, reviews, doing projects and maximize time spent on enjoying life, exploring Delhi and watching movies. Hari delves into the backgrounds and personalities of both his friends but does not share his personal history. It is a time of learning who he is and becoming the person he aspires to, a time of self discovery. Through their many escapades, including one that almost gets them expelled, they graduate as average Five Pointer students!
