Scarlet Feather
(Maeve Binchy)
Two friends, Tom Feather and Cathy Scarlet start a catering company in Dublin. The story follows them as they struggle to balance it with Tom's girlfriend Marcella's attempts to become a model and Cathy's husband Neil's busy career as a lawyer. Neither of them are quite taken seriously and Tom's parents' disappointment at him not joining the family builders is almost mirrored by the disapproval that Cathy gets as a matter of fact from her snobbish mother in law. Hannah remains convinced that her cleaner's daughter is just not good enough for her son, whatever she does, until events are turned on her late in the book. The business momentum is just starting to make life very busy for Cathy and Tom when two children turn up at a party that Scarlet Feather are catering for Cathy's parents in law. Enter Simon and Maud, twin children of Neil's paternal uncle, troubled at first, but rounding out beautifully in character and central to the ending. They add charm and excitement to Cathy's life, give Cathy's parents Muttie and Lizzie a chance to come alive again themselves, add roundness to much of the story, balance its potential for bleakness amidst various catastrophes in its middle chapters, and then pit them all along with a wonderfully portrayed young social worker against Simon and Maude's uncaring and unaware family. There is a marvelous twist as one of the family turn against Tom and Cathy and a well balanced ending as the situation becomes uncovered and he shows compassion, almost managing to redeem himself - but not quite. The shy and quiet accountant that arranges for their premises and then becomes a great strength to the business, Cathy's glamorous aunt who is also one of her closest friends and Tom's wheeler dealer brother all add to the overall picture with parts of their own very different and very colourful and well ? written stories.
