Shock
(Robin Cook)
It starts for Deborah and Joanna with an advert for egg donors from a prestigious fertility clinic. They are paid well and are able to enjoy the time that they take to finish their studies in relative luxury as a result. But then they get curious about what happened to their eggs. They try the direct approach but are turned away, and hacking into the institute's computer seems to be almost impossible. Therefore they decided that the only possibility is to get at the system from the inside. Within days, they are on site ? employed in a lab and in the administrative offices under false names. They realise that they only have a limited amount of time so leave their entry point in the system and head home. There are complications along the line caused by Deborah's disguise, which often serves to assist in their goals, but ultimately looks like it may prove to be their undoing. It is puzzling that the numbers of eggs don't line up with the original reports that they received ? Deborah's being recorded as none, and Joanna's as literally hundreds. The information that they receive from the database leads them to two potential children from Joanna's donations. When they go to see the addresses given for the foster homes they are shocked by what meets them and decide that they must break back in to the building to complete the picture. Almost as soon as they get there they are discovered, but still they are able to uncover the sheer horrors of the total story, including the possible solution of what happened to a previous donor who just disappeared after her visit, and to give the staff the slip almost right up until the end. Superb descriptions of an old abandoned hospital with its various contraptions and spooky ambience provide a fitting background to a slightly unnerving story, finished with just enough closure to do justice, and just enough uncertainty to leave a reminder of the potential effects of greed.
