Children Of Dune
(Frank Herbert)
Alia has governed in Arrakis during nine years in which the changes that were hinted in the second book have taken place. What was once a dessert planet with few plants and limited water is rapidly changing into a planet full of green areas and torrential rains, something some of the older Fremen had not seen in their lives. Slowly but surely the dessert is receding and finding a big worm is becoming more difficult. Apart from these physical changes, there have been political and economical changes in the Empire. The religious priest that led the jihad during Paul's Empire, are part of the political body of the Regency led by Saint Alia, as she is considered among her supporters. The frictions with some Fremen that we saw in the second novel, are more and more present and will eventually become a civil war between the religious Fremen that support Alia and her Messiah (Paul Muad?Dib) and the Fremen who wish to get back to their ancient way of living. In this third part we are more aware of the frailty upon which Alia?s government is based and how her messianic religion which will finally destroy her. In this context, we will find a big number of different complots and wars to throw off Alia of her throne as Regent. There are the Bene Gesserit whose main goal is to obtain the Atreides genes and to test Paul?s twins in order to assure that those preborn children are not Abomination like, for that they use Jessica Atreides who has returned to the sisterhood after her betrayal. There are also the Fremen who do not agree with Alia?s way of governing and who have gone back to the dessert where the will declare a civil war. There is the Corrino house that will tray to win back the throne, especially Wensicia Corrino who will try to kill Paul?s twins so that her son Farad'n can be emperor. There is also the Preacher, a man of the dessert, who has suddenly appeared and who tries to remember every one of Paul?s real religion which has nothing to do with the religion Alia?s preachers extend in the Empire. Finally, there is Alia herself who sees what is happening to the planet and who will try to make as much profit as she can before the spice disappears completely. But among those complots, everybody forgets about Paul's twins who have inherited their father's past lives. Profiting an attack of two Laza tigers send by family Corrino to kill them, Leto disappears in the dessert seeking an answer to his double question: how to escape Abomination and how to construct a golden path which will save humanity from their extinction. His sister Ghanima convinced of his death, will play the role of a mourning woman who oaths to revenge his life with Farad'n's blood. Alia will profit this assassination tentative to sing a necessary treaty with house Corrino by marrying Ghanima with Farad'n. At the same time Jessica will profit a confusion created in Alia?s council to escape from her daughter?s clutches as she has already confirmed that the rumours about her being possessed are true. She is dragged outside Dune by Duncan Idaho, Alia?s husband, who brings her to Salussa Secundus, the planet where live the exiliated Corrino, so she can instruct Farad?n. Meanwhile, Leto wanders through the dessert in a worm he has captured seeking the two prohibited cities Jacurutu and Tanzerouft two ancient Fremen sanctuaries that now are populated by smugglers and Fremen who are not accepted by any other tribe. In these cities, Leto expects to find the Preacher, rumoured to be Paul Muad?Dib, and find the answers to his questions. While supervising an abandoned sietch, he is surprised by the inhabitants of Jacurutu who imprison him in a cave. He will live in this cave for some weeks or months being tested by the sietch's chieftain Namri and Gurney Halleck who had been previously send to the dessert by Jessica so he could test Leto Atreides humanity. In order to test Leto, Namri and Gurney Halleck give the boy the water of live and a diet full of spice, ill provoke Leto to enter in a trance-like state in which he has visions of the past and of the future. Leto has to pass the most difficult task in his path: he confronts his multiple inner lives fighting against the multitude inside for control of his body and mind. Finally, Leto wins his inner war with the multiple lives by entwining his own personality with the other lives which prepares him for his final task, the terrible decision his father was not able to take. Then Leto travels to Tanzerouft where he merges with the santrout and converts himself in a new symbiotic live prepared to confront his enemies. He again wanders through the dessert, destroying every sietch he finds in his way and killing numerous worms thus provoking the plotters to reunite in a single place, Paul's ancient Keep. Jessica and Farad?n will return to Dune to effectuate Ghanima?s marriage with Farad?n, Stilgar who had hid in the dessert due to a betrayal caused by Duncan, will get back to sign a treaty of peace with the regent and Leto followed by the Preacher will arrive to put an end to the complots by crowning himself emperor.
