Developing Your Curiosity Can Pay Off
(Perry Wilbur)

The ability to develop your curiosity can benefit you on and off the job. The more you can learn about the work you do, the better your chance to advance. Think about it. If you learned just one new useful fact about your job or vocation each day for the next 365 days (assuming planet earth is still here then), you would be well on your way to becoming an expert...if not already one.
Let?s face it. Knowledge has been multiplying at an enormous rate. According to communications expert and researcher Robert T. Oliver, this modern era has more than a hundred times as much to learn as a half century ago. With this in mind, one almost has to keep up with the fast-changing developments of today...no matter what.
The men who built the Titanic were certain she had everything. The great ship was reported to be unsinkable, as we all know now. Everything you can imagine?all the luxuries of 1912?were aboard the huge ship...except enough lifeboats. This one mistake was a fatal one of over-confidence. No one was even curious enough to remotely consider anything happening to the ship.
If the radio men or the captain of the Titanic had been more curious about the reported iceberg?and the possibility that there might be additional icebergs?there might have been enough time to save the ship. The fact is that being curious can pay off in many ways, including possibly saving your life.
How do you develop more curiosity? Taking business, for example, and the art of innovation, one way is to simply think about a change, or how an existing product might be improved. One of the most popular games of all time was originated this way. One rainy day a man decided to stay home and think up a new game for his own amusement. The happy result was the game Monopoly, which is still at the top as a bestseller.
It?s vitally important to keep asking questions. How can you do your job or work better? Is there a better, quicker way to improve or streamline the type of work you do? How about any ideas for further departments? The possibilities are endless, but you don?t stand a chance at innovation unless you keep asking significant questions...even if you just silently ask them in your own mind.
Curiosity can also make your spare time more enjoyable and interesting. You might start a new hobby that can bring you a much greater sense of satisfaction and even profit. Henry Ford started developing his early Ford models this way, after he got curious about the idea of building a cheaper car that would still offer good transportation for the public.
Developing more curiosity about your job, or any number of other things, can being you much more of a sense of fulfillment in your life. The reason is that your interest and imagination are triggered. Learning itself then takes on a magnetic and enjoyable aspect.
You?re certainly more alive when you?re curious. As Samuel Johnson once noted, Curiosity is, in great and generous minds, the first passion and the last. Strive to develop more curiosity and watch how it enriches all areas of your life. More curiosity power to you.
