Cruise liners tend to be spots where people go to relax, unwind or re-spark a romance. Homicide isn't one of the usual reasons, but this means nothing to Chaz Perrone. A pretty boy who cares more about his erection than nature, Chaz plans to get rid of his wife Joey by tossing her over the side of the boat, leaving no one the wiser. One stormy night, Chaz musters the courage and does it, preparing to fake the role of a widow down the long road ahead.
One problem occurs: Joey, a star swimmer in high school, survives the fall and miraculously drifts to a pile of Jamaican pot. She's then rescued by former cop Mick Stanahan, whose island house and Doberman Strom are anything but typical.
After she recuperates, Joey has one thing on her mind: With Mick as an ally, they concoct a plan to put Chaz through a living hell. Soon enough, Chaz sees that his plan doesn't go as smoothly as he hoped. Only a week after his wife is reported missing, he has to deal with his corrupted employer Red Hammernut, his assigned bodyguard Tool who wears overalls and loves Mountain Dew, determined cop named Karl Rolvaag, a mistress named Ricca who doesn't want to die and a barrage of mosquito bites while working as a marine biologist in the Everglades. These are just a few of the things that happen to Chaz, making him realize as days pass that killing your wife and getting away with it is harder than it looks; after all this, maybe Chaz will decide to do something relaxing, like taking a cruise.
This is just a sample of the world Carl Hiaasen creates in his latest release. He says that Florida is an insane place in the novel, but who know how right he actually was.
